Madhu Krishna

Country Lead – Sanitation, India Country Office, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Madhu Krishna leads the foundation’s India initiative on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and brings with her a diversity of experience in a wide range of fields including private, public and nonprofit sector work. She has been a development professional for over 16 years, with a special focus on program design, evaluation, and policy and advocacy across various initiatives, including public health (vaccines, maternal and child health, communicable diseases), agriculture / poverty and livelihood; and women’s empowerment. She also brings her expertise in strengthening development organizations in project management, strategy development and creating / utilizing networks to align and work towards common goals. She is deeply interested in gender and social and economic equity.

Before joining the foundation, Madhu worked for a number of organizations in the areas of maternal and child health, family planning and strategy formulation including FHI, Digital Green, Landesa, PATH, Intra Health and the Gates Foundation. As the Asia Regional Director for Voxiva, Inc. a private sector information technology company she worked on developing innovative ICT solutions integrating cellphones and the internet for the development sector.  Prior to that, she was a Senior Program Officer and co-country lead for PATH in India. During her tenure there, she supported all of PATH’s programs in India and was the lead for PATH’s Children’s Vaccine Program in India to introduce new routine vaccines. Before joining PATH, Madhu worked at a niche economic and engineering consulting company that honed her skills in program design, market assessment, techno-economic feasibility analyses and impact assessment.

She has a Master’s degree in Social Sciences from the University of Delhi.
