Most of us are aware of what yoga is. We know that the practice of it is a union of body and mind that is extremely beneficial to us physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Yet, we rarely encourage our children to reap these benefits. Fact is, children also encounter emotional, social and physical challenges or conflicts. A dedicated yoga practice that includes breathing techniques, behavioural guidelines and physical postures can be of incredible value to them. What's more, we can introduce children to yoga from the age of four onwards, giving them a firm foundation of physical and spiritual resilience.
Here are some benefits of teaching yoga to young children.
1. It builds concentration
There are many asanas (such as ekpadasana, garudasana and natrajasana) that help in improving one's focus. Good concentration is essential for children as they learn and develop.
2. It boosts memory
Studies suggest that regular practice of yoga helps in improving brain power. Sarvangasana and many forward-bending asanas are particularly beneficial in improving memory and other mental functions. Meditation also works wonders.
3. It enhances immunity
Kids often fall prey to cold and cough despite all the care taken by their parents. Yoga stimulates your nervous, endocrine, digestive and circulatory systems enhancing their functioning. Simple asanas such as bhujangasana, dog pose, plank, and simple deep breathing techniques can safeguard you from easily falling victim to germs.
4. It supports speech development
Bhujangasana and ustrasana help create pressure in the neck area where voice box is located, which in turn helps in improving speech. Chanting "om" also produces vibrations that can improve your voice.
5. It improves physical agility
Asanas such as Utkatasana, konasana, hastapadangusthasana and balancing asanas improve mind-body coordination. Asanas when combined with proper diet help improve your strength, stability and flexibility.
6. It helps create emotional balance
Like adults, children go through various emotional states such as stress, anxiety, depression and guilt. Yoga provides training for emotional balance, it helps in improving self-esteem, self-confidence and developing a positive attitude towards life.
