Elections in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, held two months after the devastating flood in September, had a record turn out of voters.

Campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an audacious bid for power in the Muslim majority state, which has been wracked by a violent militancy for Kashmir's independence for the past two decades.

With an estimated 300,000 troops on the ground, the state of Jammu and Kashmir is one of the most heavily militarised regions in the world.

The BJP has set its sights on winning more than 44 seats in the assembly to secure power in the state.

The day of counting the votes is on Dec. 23, 2014.

Here are some moments from the elections.
