The Sameeksha Trust that runs the Economic And Political Weekly (EPW), has appointed Professor Gopal Guru as its new editor.

Outlook quoted a statement from the trust as saying, "The Sameeksha Trust has appointed Professor Gopal Guru as the Editor of Economic and Political Weekly for a period of five years."

This comes almost a year after previous editor, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, stepped down after a controversy over an article.

Guru is a professor of social and political theory at the Center of Political Science at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He is also the author of numerous articles on Dalits, women, politics and philosophy.

The JNU website states that Guru's areas of interest include Indian Political Thought, Humiliation, Social Movements.

Guru becomes editor of the publication after Guha Thakurta quit following differences with the trust over an article about the Adani group.

The Adani Group had sent a legal notice to the EPW for the article that suggested that the government had bent rules in favour of the group.

In a statement after Guha Thakurta's resignation, the trust had said that the "Mr Guha Thakurta initiated a legal process ostensibly on behalf of the Sameeksha Trust without informing, let alone obtaining approval of, the Trust although such a decision was not in the domain of the Editor to make".

Guha Thakurta had been appointed as the editor in April 2016 after then editor C Rammanohar Reddy had stepped down over disagreements with the trust.
