BHOPAL – A 19-year-old college student was on the way back from her coaching class when she was kidnapped by four youths, dragged to a desolate spot near a railway track close to Habibganj station, and raped for hours.
The woman is pursuing her graduation and preparing for the civil services exam.
The youths escaped, leaving the injured girl in the bushes near the railway track, close to Railway Protection Force (RPF) police station. The survivor somehow managed to drag herself to the police station and informed her parents, both of whom are police personnel.
Still, none of the two police stations — MP Nagar and Habibganj — both in the heart of New Bhopal, registered an FIR, passing the buck, saying that the area of the crime did not fall under their jurisdiction.
Finally, the railway police registered a case. SP Anita Malviya told media persons that the young woman was gang-raped by four youths – Golu Chadhar, Amar, Rajesh and Ramesh. She said that the accused have been arrested. Times of India reported that the man identified as Golu — Golu Bihari Chadhar — is out on bail after being charged with murder of his infant daughter.
The alleged rapists took gutkha, cigarette and tea breaks between the horrific assault, the TOI report said.
The ordeal didn't end even after her ordeal. According to reports, at the Habibganj GRP, an officer allegedly accused the victim of "making up a filmy story".
The incident had occurred on late Tuesday night, and throughout Wednesday, the traumatized family had tried to get an FIR registered, until railway police took action.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of Bhopal has ordered a probe into the incident of negligence in conducting their civic duty and SI RN Tekam of MP Nagar police station has been suspended.
The incident has led to shock in the state capital. The MP Human Rights Commission has sought a report from Bhopal police. The Opposition has targeted the state government for poor law-and-order. Minister for Women and Child Development, Archana Chitnis, has said that it was shameful and for such horrific cases the culprits need to be given death penalty.
In 2015, a woman was raped on a moving bus in Bhopal by a man assisted by two associates, one of whom was the driver, triggering painful memories in the city of the Delhi gangrape of a young physiotherapy student.Suggest a correction
