WATCH: Beyonce's Powerful New Video To Honour International Day Of The Girl

Empowerment through art.

Yesterday, 11 October, was International Day of the Girl and Beyonce honoured it with a powerful new video of her Freedom track from her 2016 hit album Lemonade.

The new videos shows young girls from around the world mouthing the song's lyrics, while disturbing statistics about atrocities against girls are outlined in the background — like 71% of human trafficking victims are female, 63 million girls have undergone female genital mutation, 130 million girls are out of school, among many others.

The most piercing moment of the video comes in the form of a little Black girl dancing in front of the Capitol Hill, with Abraham Lincoln's statue watching over her in the background. In another shot, another one dances in front of the White House.

Intentional or not, these moments are poignant reminders of the oppression faced by girls who find themselves at the intersection of sexism and racism in Trump's America.

Less than a day old, the video has already garnered over 1.8 million views and 63,000 reactions on Facebook.

"Today is #DayoftheGirl. Girls around the world are fighting for their freedom every day. Join me, Chime for Change, and The Global Goals by taking action for #FreedomForGirls now: www.globalgoals.org/dayofthegirl," Beyonce wrote on Facebook.

The video was first screened last month at Goalkeepers, an event hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is directed by MJ Delaney, and produced with UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Project Everyone.
