In what seems to be a horrific case of harassment by school authorities, an 11-year-old student of Class 5 committed suicide by consuming poison in Gorakhpur.

Reports suggest that the reason behind this extreme step taken by the student of St Anthony's Convent School was that he was made to stand for almost three hours.

Hindustan Times reports that a suicide note, found from the boy's school bag, said that he decided to take his own life because of the harsh punishment.

The boy's parents have blamed the authorities of his school for the tragedy.

"He was quite upset when he came back from school. The teacher had made him stand on the bench for a long time and tortured him mentally. He did not look normal from that day and seemed to be in depression. Today, he consumed poison... The school is responsible for his death," the boy's father told The Times of India.

The boy was taken to the BRD Medical college hospital, where he died during treatment.

In his suicide note, the boy wrote that teachers shouldn't be giving such punishment to students.

Hindustan Times quoted his suicide note as saying, "Aaj 15-09-17 mera pehla exam tha. Meri class teacher ne mujhe 9.15 tak rulaya, khada rakha isliye kyunki woh chaapluson ki baat maanti hai. Aaj maine soch liya hai ki main marne wala hoon. Meri aakhri iksha meri ma'am ko kisi bachhe ko itni badi saza na dene ko kahein. (I had my first exam today on September 15. My class teacher made me stand till 9:15 because she only listens to sycophants. I have decided to die. My last wish is that "my ma'am" should not punish any other student in such manner)."

The school has not made any statements regarding the issue.

ABPLive reports that the parents have lodged a complaint agains the school authorities.
