VIJAYAWADA -- Hours after their marriage, a young couple committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district, police said on Wednesday.

The lovers, both engineering students, left their homes on Tuesday to marry in Vijayawada but their bodies were found on the railway tracks near Vetapalem railway station early on Wednesday.

Battula Sandeep (22), a third-year engineering student at a private college in Chirala, was in love with Bhogireddy Mounika (20), who was a second-year student in the same college.

The families of the couple were opposed to their marriage.

The friends of the deceased couple said they married in Vijayawada on Tuesday. However, the couple sent messages to their friends the same night that they were going to die.

A case has been registered in this regard and the police are probing the reason for their extreme step.

Police suspect that the coupe ended their lives as they could not muster the courage to face their families after the marriage.
