Salma Ansari, wife of former vice-president of India Hamid Ansari, has alleged that unidentified men had mixed rat poison in the tank water of Aligarh's Madarsa Chacha Nehru.

The madrassa is run by the Al Noor Charitable Society which Salma Ansari used to formerly head.

Calling the incident shocking and scary, she told ANI:

The warden, Junaid Siddiqui, alleged that one of the men was also carrying a gun.

He told Hindustan Times, "It was around 10 pm and I was teaching some boarders on the upper floor of the madarsa when Afzal, a student of Class 7, came and narrated sighting the two men pouring something inside the water cooler. He was carrying a wrapper of Mortein rat kill whose contents were later found inside the tank."

Aligarh SSP Rajesh Pandey told The Times of India, "Fortunately, a student spotted the miscreants and alerted the warden. We have collected water samples which will be sent to forensic science laboratory (FSL) for tests on Saturday."

An FIR has been registered against the men.

The Indian Express reported that the unidentified miscreants have been charged under Sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, the two men are yet to be identified.
