Even as the country reels from the shock of the brutal murder of a 7-year-old Delhi schoolboy, another case, this one involving a 4-year-old girl from Bengaluru, has come to light. The girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in a private school in Bengaluru's Dasarahalli area on Tuesday. Reports suggest the involvement of a school's security guard in the crime.

According to NDTV, the police has detained a security guard for questioning in the matter.

The incident came to light when the child returned home from school on Tuesday, 12 September, and complained of pain, following which her parents took her to the MSR Ramaiah Hospital for a checkup. Medical examination revealed that she had been sexually assaulted.

However, the police said they are waiting for the formal medical report. A case under the POCSO Act has been registered.

"We have registered a case based on the complaint of the parents. But we are not getting supporting evidence from the CCTV cameras or medical examination. No guards were seen near the girl... we are waiting for a formal medical report and to talk to the child," NDTV quoted senior police officer Chethan Singh Rathor as saying.

When questioned, the little girl told her parents that a man at school had misbehaved with her and touched her private parts.

The girl's parents and other locals reportedly gathered outside the school on Tuesday night and protested against the crime. The police had to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

In the last few days, several cases of abuse of children in schools have made headlines, shocking and angering people across the country. A day after the Class II boy at Ryan International School in Gurgaon was murdered inside the school's washroom, a 5-year-old school girl was allegedly raped by her school's peon in Delhi on Saturday, 9 September.

The Supreme Court will, on 15 September, hear a plea filed by two women lawyers seeking implementation of existing guidelines to ensure safety and well-being of children in schools across the country.
