The brutal murder of a seven-year-old boy in the bathroom of his school in Gurgaon on Friday, after he was allegedly sexually assaulted by an older man, has brought into focus the alarming reality of child sexual abuse in India.

While the father of the child has accused the school authorities of neglect, asking them to held accountable for the crime, the incident exposes how children may not be protected from sexual predators even in supposed "safe havens".

There are no recent studies on child abuse in India, with the last one dating back a decade ago. That report found over half of the victims of child abuse to be boys, and that one in two children were sexually abused.

It can safely be assumed that this is a grossly under-reported number; many cases go unreported. While some of these cases are not reported by adults to the police, many times the abused children don't understand they have been wronged or are too scared to tell anyone, allowing the crime to go unpunished.

In a 2012 episode of the television show 'Satyamev Jayate', Bollywood star Aamir Khan had tackled the subject of child abuse. A workshop at the end of the episode teaching children the difference between "good touch and bad touch" is especially helpful.
