A man was given a basic lesson in speaking to a woman when a magistrate's court in Maharashtra's Thane found him guilty of calling his neighbour "chammak challo" (a flashy woman). The court fined him a rupee and sentenced him to spending the rest of the day in prison until court proceedings were over, reportedThe Times of India.

According to the report, the man had used the derogatory word when his neighbour accidentally knocked over a dustbin on his apartment floor. She was reportedly returning from a morning walk with her husband and her leg hit the trash can on her way upstairs. The complainant told the court that the man came out of his house and abused her, and no action was taken after she made a complaint to the housing society where both the accused and she resided.

The court found the man guilty under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with "word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman". This is punishable with a year's imprisonment, a fine, or both.

As the man had already given a written apology to the woman, the court gave him the minimum sentence.
