A 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district was allegedly murdered on Tuesday morning by five men when she refused their advances.

"Ragni Dubey, a resident of Bajha village, was on her way to school on her bicycle when five men on two motorcycles intercepted her near Shankarpur Bhawani temple and started harassing her to talk to them," SP Sujata Singh told PTI.

When the girl refused to talk to them, they pushed her to the ground and allegedly "slit her throat with a knife and escaped."

One of the accused, Prince Tiwari, is the son of the village head. He is the only one who has been arrested; the four others are absconding.

The deceased girl's family claim that the men had been harassing their daughter for over six months. "There is a hand-pump outside my house. They used to come and sit there and pass lewd remarks against my daughter. We should have gone to the police," NDTV quoted the girl's mother as saying.

The family further added that the village head had promised the harassment would stop when they reported the matter to him a few days ago.

On the complaint of the family, an FIR has been filed against the village pradhan, his son, his nephew and two others of the village, the SP said, according to reports.
