A tenth grade student from Telangana who had shot a photo of his snoozing class teacher and forwarded it to the district education officer on WhatsApp, was tied to a volleyball pole in his school and beaten with sticks by cops, allegedly at the behest of some teacher.

According to the Times of India, the student of the Zilla Parishad High School at Midjil in Mahbubnagar was thrashed by two cops, including a sub-inspector, on Saturday, but police told the paper that he was drinking on school premises.

"The boy had taken the sleeping teacher's photo on July 27 and forwarded it to the Mahbubnagar district education officer (DEO) on WhatsApp. The next day the DEO suspended teacher K Ramulu," Achyuta Rao, the honorary president of Balala Hakkula Sangham, a child rights organisation, told the paper.

The boy had injuries on his legs, arms and buttocks, alleged that he was again abused at a police station.

Mahbubnagar SP, Rema Rajeswari, has ordered an inquiry into the incident. Rao has said that even if the boy was drinking, the police had no right to assault a minor and had to be held responsible for their action.

An NDTV report said the boy was tied to the post, but his friends managed to escape on seeing the cops.
