Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan may have taken a leaf out of an old school teacher's book when he reportedly admonished the state's administrative brass on Saturday. According to reports, the CM threatened to "hang the officers upside down" if there were delays in clearing revenue projects.
"Ulta tanga dena" (hang upside down) is a familiar refrain for many who went to schools where teachers weren't averse to physically threatening errant students (and sometimes acting upon these threats). For a veteran political leader issuing the same threat to top government officials in 2017, though, is an entirely different matter.
While there is some dispute on whether Chouhan directed these threats to district collectors or revenue officers, Bharatiya Janata Party sources reportedly confirmed that he made the statement during a BJP state executive committee meeting on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the opposition has criticised the CM for his words, suggesting the state leader was covering up his own government's corruption and incompetency by "shifting blame to bureaucrats".
