Karnataka IPS officer Roopa Moudgil, who had made a report on alleged malpractices within the state police public a few days ago, has been transferred. She had revealed that her seniors took a hefty bribe to provide 'VIP treatment' to jailed AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala.

Moudgil, who was serving as the DIG of the Prisons Department till last 16 July, was moved to the Traffic and Road Safety department as a DIG, on Monday with "immediate effect".

The decision of her transfer came within a week of her making a report public, which said a bribe of ₹2 crore was paid by Sasikala to senior prison officials, including director central of prisons HN Satyanarayana Rao, for getting privileged treatment, which, among other things, including a private kitchen.

However, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah reportedly said the officer was transferred "for administrative reasons."

"We cannot be sitting and explaining it to the press."

The CM's response, in fact, gave the opposition a chance to launch an attack on the ruling government.

Calling the move unfair, BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje reportedly said, "Honest officers are being targeted by the government, and dishonest people are being protected."

Incidentally, earlier this month, a woman cop in Uttar Pradesh was transferred, after she confronted an angry mob of BJP workers who had gathered after a district-level party worker was issued a challan — a penalty slip — for not having appropriate documentation for his vehicle. People lost no time pointing out on social media that she had to pay the price for taking on BJP in their stronghold.

Weeks after that incident, Karnataka BJP chief B. S. Yeddyurappa criticized "corrupt" Congress.

And the state government, led by Congress, in turn took potshots at Moudgil and N S Megharikh, Additional Director General of Police, for taking the matter to the media without furnishing any evidence.

"The interaction of both police officers with the media during the course of inquiry was unwarranted, and amounted to a serious violation of the All India Services Conduct Rules," the report read.

People on social me have once again come forward in support of the cop with hashtags like DontPunishRoopa and #IStandWithDIGRoopa.
