UPDATE: The UP police responded to the story in a tweet saying the accusations are false and the woman has been arrested. The case is under investigation.

In a classic example of how protectors turn perpetrators, a police officer at Rampur's Ganj police station in Uttar Pradesh reportedly asked a rape survivor to have sex with him before he takes action against the accused.

The outrageous piece of news was reported by Times Of India.

According to the report, a 37-year-old woman who had gone to seek help at the Rampur's Ganj police station, was told by sub-inspector Jai Prakash Singh that he would nab the accused only after she has sex with him. That wasn't all. After she denied the request, Singh, who was the investigating officer in the rape case that took place in February this year, filed a closure report.

"Whenever I approached SI Jai Prakash Singh seeking arrest of the accused, he would say he first wanted to have sex with me. He even called up on my mobile phone and invited me to visit him in his room alone. When I turned him down, he filed a closure report in the case a fortnight ago," the rape survivor told ToI.

The woman then recorded the conversation with the police officer and approached the Superintendent of Police with the evidence. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Additional superintendent of police told ToI, "Ganj station officer has been asked to investigate the matter against the SI and submit a report."

The ToI report noted that the woman was raped by two men in February when she had gone to visit a relative and was on her way back to Rampur city. However, a case was registered only after she approached a local court a week later.
