The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision of appointing the state urban development minister Firhad Hakim as the chairman of a 'development board' of a Shiva temple in West Bengal.

According to a report in News18, opposition parties in the state have accused Banerjee of trying to appease the minority by appointing a Muslim leader as the head the Tarakeshwar Development Board (TDB), which is meant to overlook the development and preservation of the 288-year-old Shiva temple.

BJP National General Secretary, Kailash Vijayvargiya tweeted calling the appointment of Hakim Mamata Banerjee's false attempt to appear 'secular'.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy told News18:

"I have already set up my legal eagle team for Bengal to challenge Mamata's horrible temple appointment. A writ petition will be filed."

Hakim, popularly known as 'Bobby', had triggered a controversy earlier in April this year, by describing Garden Reach area in Kolkata as "mini-Pakistan" to a correspondent of leading Pakistan daily, The Dawn.
