In a heartbreaking incident in the Jamalpur Village near Pataudi, twins - five-year-old girls - died after getting locked inside a defunct car.
The Hindu reported that the incident took place outside their grandparents home where the twins -- Harsha and Harshita -- would play with new born puppies under the car.
While they were usually accompanied by their teenage cousin Harsh, the two girls were playing by themselves on Tuesday when the incident happened because Harsh had gone to the town.
The girls' uncle Vikram Yadav told the newspaper, "As fate would have it, Harsh went to town for some work on Tuesday morning and the girls sneaked out of the house to play with the puppies around 2 p.m. The car's door lock was not working properly and could not be opened from inside. The girls probably got stuck inside the car. It was a hot afternoon and no one noticed them there for long."
Reports suggest that the twins were visiting their grandparents along with their two-year-old brother and their mother. Their father is an army jawan posted in Meerut.
News18 reported that the family realised that the girls were missing around 4 pm, and began frantically searching for them.
Finally, they were found unconscious inside the car, one in the backseat and one in the front seat and were rushed to the hospital.
"The girls were found unconscious in the car and were rushed to a nearby hospital. They were declared brought dead by the doctors," said a police officer told the news channel.
And while the police have ruled out foul play, the family remains inconsolable.
Their grandfather told The Times of India, "They were my dolls. They served me tea around 3.45pm. We last saw them around 4.45pm, when the two were given a lemon drink. Family members had been looking for them since around 5pm. Finally, they found them inside the car around 6.15pm."
Another family member, shocked by the incident, told the newspaper, "The two girls were heart and soul of the family."
