Amid the controversy around noise pollution by religious institutions, a group mosques in Malappuram in Kerala have decided to take a big step in their effort to curb noise pollution.
Valiya Juma Masjid, the biggest mosque in Vazhakkad area, has signed an agreement with other small mosques in the area, according to reports. The mosques have decided to have a single Azaan – the call for prayer recited five times a day.
President of Vazhakkad Mosques Committee, TP Abdul Azeez, told The Newsminute that the call for prayers by the mosques in the area at different times and multiple times in the day, had caused inconvenience to a lot of people. They discussed the problem and came to an unanimous solution.
Valiya Juma Masjid, the biggest in Vazhakkad area, will deliver a single Azaan. 17 other small mosques around the area will only repeat it without the use of loudspeakers.
"Valiya Juma Masjid has set an example. It will go a long way in curbing the mindless use of ear-splitting speakers," a resident told Hindustan Times.
For the last six days, the mosques have been practicing this new rule.
