UPDATE: This story has been updated with inputs from BJP sources.

Hours after reports indicated that Gujarat's former director general of police (DGP) PP Pandey, an accused in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, was reportedly being considered as the chairman of the state's human rights commission, BJP sources told HuffPost India that there was no such plan. Earlier reports suggested that this was Pandey's "post retirement appointment".

Pandey is facing charges in court for his alleged role in an encounter that killed Ishrat Jahan, a 19-year-old girl based in Mumbra near Mumbai, Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali Akbarali Rana and Zeeshan Johar on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on 15 June, 2004.

Earlier this year, even though he was due to retire in January, he was promoted to DGP and given a three-month extension, after it was approved by the central government.

However, he was forced to resign in April this year after a former Mumbai police commissioner Julio Ribeiro filed a petition against the promotion. Ribeiro has also served as DGP Gujarat. The Supreme Court had said that it would order Pandey's removal if he didn't resign.

Pandey was heading the state crime branch when the encounter took place.
