In a horrifying case of animal cruelty, 31 dogs in an animal shelter were attacked with acid, machetes and sticks in Mohali, Haryana.

According to an NDTV report, it all began a few months ago when the owner of Protection and Care for Animals (PACFA), Resham Dhaliwal, rented two rooms for her animal shelter. The owner of the property, Balwinder Singh, wanted Dhaliwal to vacate the rooms but she refused.

A dispute arose, which is when the dogs were attacked. According to NDTV, Dhaliwal said that she found the body of a dog charred with acid burns. A spokesperson for the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said that 11 of the dogs had been seriously injured, while 19 had gone missing.

According to Rajan Parwinder Singh, station house officer at Sohana in Haryana, a case against Balwinder Singh, his son Jimmy and his house help Dharminder, has been registered on charges of theft, wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act.

Balwinder Singh has been arrested while the other two are absconding. The police are investigating the matter.
