A 17-year-old son of an agricultural labourer from Rajasthan has made a spectacular turnaround, stunning everyone in his village.
From being on the verge of dropping out of school due to lack of funds, the boy from Bharatpur aced the board examinations, scoring a stunning 98.2% in the science stream.
According to the Hindustan Times, Amit Kumar scored 100 in Chemistry and Mathematics respectively and came close to full marks, with 97, in Physics. His performance, which is widely lauded for obvious reasons, would not have been possible without the free schooling and hostel he got from the director of a private school.
Amit, who wants to join the Indian Administrative Services, used to cycle 13 km from his village Peepla to Bharatpur city to continue his education after passing Class VIII. He scored 94% in his Class X examinations but wasn't certain about carrying on with further education as his father struggled to pay his school fees.
Amit's older brother is a BTech student at a government engineering college in Bharatpur. According to a UNESCO report published last year, 47 million school-going children in India dropped out of school before finishing Class X in 2016.
