An eight-year-old girl who was raped in the East Champaran district of Bihar on Tuesday is fighting for her life in hospital.

The Telegraphreported today that the Class 1 student was allegedly raped by her teacher, Raj Kumar Choudhary, at the CBSE-affiliated APJ Abdul Kalam Model School. Her father alleged that 18-year-old Choudhary assaulted the child because she did not finish her homework and then raped her in room that is used by security guards in the school. He also told the police that there were bloodstains on her uniform. "She was writhing in pain," he told the newspaper.

Choudhary has been arrested from his village around 200 kilometers from Patna, the The Telegraph further reported.

Mohammad Kalam, the owner of the school, said that he was "shocked."

It was school employees who informed the child's parents when her condition deteriorated, but the SHO (Station House Officer) Dharmendra Kumar believes the role of the staffers should be investigated. "Initially, they tried to suppress the matter," he said.
