In a horrifying case of spousal abuse, a man in Pune slashed his wife's face with a blade because he assumed that she was having an affair. According to a report in mid-day, Nitin Divte assaulted his wife because she used to dress well, and that made him conclude that she was having an affair.

The wife, Rani, was admitted to the Sassoon General Hospital where the doctors had to put several stitches on her face. The assault took place on 1 May in the Bibewadi area in Pune. Rani, who is 25 years old, lodged a complaint and Nitin was arrested under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of IPC.

As reported by mid-day, Rani said that her husband never liked the fact that she used to dress well. She said that in the past couple of months he became suspicions that she was having an affair. "On May 1, after returning home, Nitin started drinking. Later, I went off to sleep after taking pills, as I was unwell. All of a sudden he started kicking and punching me. He even slashed my face with a blade and threatened to kill me. After my children raised an alarm, neighbours rushed in to help," she told the paper.

Assistant police inspector Rajan Jagdhale, told mid-day that after the neighbours ran to help Rani, Nitin fled the spot.
