The wife, Rani, was admitted to the Sassoon General Hospital where the doctors had to put several stitches on her face. The assault took place on 1 May in the Bibewadi area in Pune. Rani, who is 25 years old, lodged a complaint and Nitin was arrested under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of IPC.

"On May 1, after returning home, Nitin started drinking. Later, I went off to sleep after taking pills, as I was unwell. All of a sudden he started kicking and punching me. He even slashed my face with a blade and threatened to kill me. After my children raised an alarm, neighbours rushed in to help," she told the paper.
