Here Are Some Nifty New Google Translate Features

Google has introduced a slew of new translation tools in India.

Natural Language Processing — or, the interaction between computers and human languages — is one of Google's core area of operations. The search giant offers users many tools for converting one language into another. Today, Google introduced a new set of translation tools aimed at Indian users. Here are some new and old Google Translate features.

1. Built-in translate in Chrome

Google has included the ability to translate whole web pages with content to and from many languages. In today's announcement, it declared that the users can convert pages to and from English to nine Indian languages — Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Users can right-click anywhere on the page to bring up the menu and then click on 'translate'. On the top pane, they can also select options to convert the web page into the desired language.

2. Translate documents

The search giant has introduced natural language translation for 9 Indian languages, so instead of translating phrases the service can translate whole sentences in one go. This makes it easier to translate English documents into regional languages. Users can go to the Google Translate website and upload a document to convert it. They can post the URL of a website containing text as well and get it translated.

3. Dictionary translation

Google Translate has also added a Hindi dictionary, partnering with the Oxford University Press and bringing the Rajpal & Sons Hindi dictionary online. Users can give voice commands such as "Aadhaar ka matlab" in the Google search box and the results will be displayed directly. This can be done for English as well by speaking or typing a phrase such as "Meaning of abomination". For English words, users can search for origin, synonyms and more.

4. Local reviews in Maps

Google has extended the Neural Machine Translation to its Maps services as well. So, users can add reviews of places in local languages which can be later converted into another preferred language. A Gujarati traveller visiting Chennai can now read Tamil reviews in Gujarati.

5. Save phrases

If there are phrases that you need to remember or keep handy as you might need to use them frequently, you can click on the star button in the Translate web interface. You can also listen to the translation and edit it as well.

6. Gboard keyboard

The search giant has also updated its Gboard keyboard app with support for 22 Indian languages. It now also boasts of transliteration support for 11 languages including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, and Gujarati. Gboard already has Hindi and Hinglish keyboard along with phonetic typing support. that lets users type Hindi text in English letters and the text gets converted into Hindi (Devanagari) script.

7. Translate through camera

The Google Translate mobile app lets you use your camera to see the text and translate it into the desired language. Currently, this support is for limited languages.
