Video footage of a Gujarat policeman drinking beer inside a police vehicle in Diu surfaced yesterday, triggering an inquiry into the "matter of indiscipline".

The video shows the policeman sitting inside a Rajkot police van near Hotel Alishan in Diu, holding a beer can in his hand. The hotel houses a bar cum restaurant so it is being assumed that the policeman procured his liquor from there.

The Rajkot Rural Superintendent of Police, Antrip Sood told the Indian Express that he had instituted an inquiry. He said that 14 trainee drivers were meant to undergo training yesterday but they were not supposed to have driven off to Diu. The SP added that logbooks were being checked to ascertain which route the vehicle was supposed to have taken.

Gujarat, which has been a dry state for almost six decades, has kept tightening its prohibition laws. Situated in the Kathiawar peninsula, the Union Territory of Diu serves as a popular watering hole for western Gujarat. Close to a year ago, 11 engineers of Gujarat's state-owned power distribution company were photographed drinking in Diu while officially they were on duty in Gujarat.

In February, an amendment was made to the rules of conduct for civil servants in Bihar, prohibiting them from consuming alcohol or any other intoxicating substances even when they are outside the state.
