On December 6, 1992 a rally in favour of building a Ram Temple on site of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya went horribly wrong. Organised by the BJP, VHP and other affiliated organisations, it resulted in the demolition of the mosque and led to riots across the country that killed more than 2000 people.

While the area was put under strict security cover, it did not stop groups of kar sevaks from breaking barriers to reach the top of the mosque. The demolition took place right in front of BJP leaders like Murli Manohar Joshi, LK Advani and Uma Bharti who were at a dias set up for them.

Reports suggest that while the rally was supposed to have speeches made by the leaders present and a symbolic 'Kar Seva' was supposed to be performed, things began going out of hand as frenzied chants were raised by kar sevaks who also began breaking barriers and started to climb on to the mosque.

No one had expected the crowd to turn that violent. Pleas by the leaders fell on deaf ears. The demolition process had begun of the mosque that was built in 1528.

The Liberhan Commission, that probed the incident, had said in its report that allegedly kar sevaks were not stopped from entering the sanctum sanctorum of the mosque. It said, "this selected act of the leaders itself speaks of the hidden intentions of one and all being to accomplish demolition of the disputed structure."

The Liberhan Commission report had also accused the icons of the Hindu nationalist movement, led by LK Advani, of not stopping the demolition.

As afternoon fell, Sadhvi Rithambara, who is part of the VHP is said to have been dancing and chanting "ek dhakka aur do, Babri Masjid tod do'. And as the mosque was being demolished, VHP reportedly took out processions in celebration. Several homes of Muslims were burnt in Ayodhya.

Riots between Hindus and Muslims were not confined within the country. Temples were attacked by in Bangladesh and Pakistan even as both the country condemned the demolition. Further criticism came from Iran, UAE and other countries in the middle east. After 25 years of the incident, the Supreme Court has restored criminal charges against BJP leaders LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti who were the leaders of the movement which led to this barbaric incident.
