When someone on a group chat told Lamyaa that "your dad would beat your ass" if she took off her hijab, the 17-year-old from Pennsylvania shot off a couple of messages to her father. "Baba, I want to tell you something. I was thinking. I want to take off my hijab," wrote the teenager who is originally from Saudi Arabia.

Her father's reply, which Lamyaa posted on Twitter, has touched a chord, receiving well over 142,000 retweets, so far.

"Sweetheart that's not my decision to make, that's no man's decision to make, if it's what you feel like you want to do, go ahead, I'll support you, no matter what," he said.

Lamyaa told Buzzfeed that she shared her father's response to dispel the "mentality" people have toward Muslim women who wear a hijab.
