In an effort to prove that India's electronic voting machines (EVMs) are tamper proof, the Election Commission has thrown an open challenge to the public to hack the machines.

According to ANI, the EC is planning to invite scientists, technologists and political parties in first week of May to prove these machines are robust. The Commission also plans to separately conduct a demo of the machines in front of leaders of all major political parties to show them how the machines can't be compromised to suit a particular party, NDTV reported.

The EC has faced repeated accusations of tampering in the wake of recent state elections with calls to replace the machines with paper ballots.

The Commission has strongly defended the structural integrity of the machines, and urged the complainants to not blame the machines for their electoral failures.

On Wednesday, several members of the opposition met with president Pranab Mukherjee, expressing concerns about EVMs. They also claimed that India is seeing an increasing environment of "fear and insecurity," where voices of dissent are being muzzled.
