NEW DELHI -- India on Monday called upon Pakistan's envoy Abdul Basit following the announcement of the death penalty for alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav by Pakistan military, saying hanging Jadhav without observing basic norms of law and justice would amount to 'premeditated murder'.

According to a demarche Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar issued to Pakistan's High Commissioner Abdul Basit, Jadhav's kidnapping last year from Iran and his subsequent presence in Pakistan "has never been explained credibly."

The official statement said the proceedings leading up to the sentencing against Jadhav are "farcical" in the absence of any credible evidence against him. Indian diplomats were also not permitted with Jadhav despite repeated requests between March 2017 and March 2017, said the statement.

If basic norms of law & justice are not obsereved Govt & ppl of India will regard it as premeditated murder-MEA in demarche to Pak on Jadhav

Indian high commission officials told NDTV that they found out about the sentencing from a press statement from Pakistan in which it claimed Jadhav had "confessed" to spying and sabotage activities in Balochistan.

The Pakistani military announced earlier that Jadhav had been sentenced to death for waging war against Pakistan.
