Half Girlfriend Trailer: Arjun Kapoor And Shraddha Kapoor Caught In Full Melodramatic Love Saga

Yet another Chetan Bhagat bestseller has found its way on the big screen.
Balaji

Earlier today, the trailer of Mohit Suri's Half Girlfriend, the film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's bestseller, of the same name, premiered online.

The film features Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles.

Ostensibly, the film is about a middle-class boy from Bihar (Madhav) who falls in love with the sophisticated Riya on the glitzy campus of a premier Delhi college.

It appears that the film looks at the love story through a class prism and how that divide creates conflict between two of our potential lovers.

However, the treatment of the film is decidedly melodramatic. There's alcohol-induced relentless crying, impulsive chasing that almost gets one of them run over, an uber dramatic mother who sobs uncontrollably, even as Arijit Singh fervidly croons yet another chartbuster-in-the-making track.

The brainstorming probably involved one key question: How do we top Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2?

Balaji

It also seems that Arjun Kapoor is channeling his inner Aditya Roy Kapur, if one can do that while Shraddha is playing a slightly different version of what she played in Aashiqui 2, Rock On 2, Baaghi, and Ok Jaanu. A refreshing change.

The film is directed by Mohit Suri, who marks his second collaboration with Ekta Kapoor (the film's producer). They've previously teamed up on the mega hit, Ek Villain.

Suri, a filmmaker with a good amount of stylistic flair, is often marred by stories that are excessively melodramatic, but barring Hamari Adhuri Kahaani, it seems to have worked for him and his producer partners at Balaji. He also has producer credits on this one and so does Chetan Bhagat.

One hopes that Half Girlfriend is more promising than what its schmaltzy trailer reveals.

Word on the street is that Balaji, which has hinted at stalling future film productions due to several flops, is betting big on this love saga. And if Half Girlfriend doesn't woo the audiences in, this may very well be its swan-song.
