In a gruesome attack on Wednesday evening, a 45-year-old Delhi journalist has sustained severe injuries to her skull and brain, and is currently battling for her life at the hospital.

The Hindustan Times reports that Aparna Kalra went for a walk around 6.15 pm to Picnic Hut, a park in Delhi's Ashok Vihar and had left her phone at home, after which her sister received a call at 7.30 pm where she was told that Kalra was admitted to hospital with severe injuries. While she has remained unconscious, she gained consciousness for a few moments to tell the police that she had been attacked.

DCP (North-West) Milind Dumbre, speaking to HuffPost India, said that the police received a PCR call at 6:30 pm after passersby had called in informing about the injured woman who was lying unconscious in the park.

"Police staff and ACP reached the spot and then she was taken to the hospital," Dumbre said.

The motive behind the attack is unclear, and there are no leads so far as to who could have attacked her. There are no witnesses to the attack either.

"It is too early to say anything. We don't know if the motive of the attack was personal in nature," he said.

Dumbre also said nothing was stolen from her ruling out the possibility of robbery.

The police told HuffPost India that Kalra had received both sharp and blunt injuries to her skull. The extent of her injuries indicates how brutal the attack was.

Her uncle HC Bhatia told The Hindustan Times that parts of her skull were missing and had received injuries to her brain nerve. She is admitted to the Fortis Hospital.

He also said that she had no enmity with anybody and was a brave woman. Kalra's family too are not aware of what the motive of the attack could be.

The police are investigating the matter and more details are awaited regarding the case.

Kalra is a freelance journalist and have been previously associated with media organisations including Reuters, Mint and Business Standard.
