The Reliance Jio Prime membership plan has crossed the 50-million registered member mark, according to a report in the Economic Times. HuffPost India spoke with Jio officials who confirmed the number.

"The Jio Prime membership scheme has received an enthusiastic response from Jio customers. We are pleased to note that millions of customers are joining the scheme every day, signifying their interest in the attractive offers," the company said in an official response to ET.

Jio announced the plan in February, which allowed existing users to become Prime members after paying a one-time fee of ₹99. Prime membership enables users to choose from different Jio datapack schemes starting at ₹149. The two big plans announced at the time gave users 1 GB and 2 GB daily data for ₹303 and ₹499 monthly payments respectively.

Jio has also tied up with online wallets, offering discounts to users to become Prime members. A cashback scheme on payments from JioMoney lets users become Prime members almost for free.

In February, Jio announced that it had crossed the 100-million consumer mark. However, the number of active users is expected to come down significantly once Jio's free service ends and the Prime membership and other paid plans kick in after 31 March.
