The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the installation of CCTV cameras, minus the capability for audio recording, in at least two districts in each state and union territory of India.
In its decision, the Court has directed the 24 High Courts in the country to ensure that cameras are installed inside courtrooms as well as in the court precincts within three months, the Indian Express has reported.
According to the Telegraph, the CCTV recordings of the proceedings are to be kept with the court itself.
The order comes with some strings attached. The Indian Expressquotes the order, passed by Justices Adarsh K Goel and Uday U Lalit, as saying:
"We make it clear that the footage of the CCTV camera will not be available under the Right To Information Act and will not be supplied to anyone without permission of the concerned high court."
