In a disturbing incident reported from Madhya Pradesh, the partially-eaten body of a 70-year-old woman who had been admitted to a government hospital in Rajgarh on 22 March, was discovered in the hospital premises.

The incident came to light on Sunday evening when some sanitation workers found Bismillah Bai's dead body, half-eaten by dogs, in the hospital backyard. The workers were looking into the complaint of stench by people in the hospital.

"It was just a head and half the torso," Mukesh Gaur, the Kotwali police-in-charge, told the Times of India. "Even that had been chewed up. It was gruesome. There wasn't much left for a post-mortem." Gaur said that the deceased was identified with the help of her purse and scraps of her clothing.

According to her grandson Mohammed Nameem, Bismillah was a resident of Kumbhraj village in Guna district and had come with him and others to Rajgarh for Urs celebration. She had insisted on staying back in Rajgarh for a couple of days more.

"When she didn't return home, we came back to look for her," Nameem told TOI. "We were searching for her even today when we got the call from police."

Initial police investigations suggest that Bismillah was found lying on the road in Rajgarh on 20 March and was unwell. She was immediately taken to the district hospital in Rajgarh in an ambulance.

According to the police, hospital authorities were unaware of the missing patient for the last 2 days.

"How did she end up in the backyard of the ward where she was admitted," the investigating officer told TOI. "Why wasn't any information given to police after she went missing? And what did the authorities do to trace her? These are some of the aspects we are investigating."

This is the fifth such incident in a span of ten months reported from a hospital in Madhya Pradesh. In January this year, dogs mutilated a newborn's body behind district hospital in Shahdol.
