NEW DELHI -- A group of JNU students clashed with private security guards on the campus on Friday during a protest demonstration over a controversial notification restricting the number of scholars a professor can guide for MPhil and PhD courses.

Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University staged a sit-in outside the northern gate of the campus, following which some of them tried to close the gate and stopped people from entering or coming out of the varsity campus.

Security men dispersed the protesters, triggering a minor clash.

The students later continued their demonstration over the University Grants Commission (UGC) 2016 notification that restricts a professor from guiding more than three MPhil and eight PhD scholars.
