14 Fakes Universities Have Been Operating With Impunity For Nearly Two Decades, No Action Taken: Report

The University Grant Commission has been naming 14 universities in its list of fake educational institutions for almost two decades, begging the question why nothing has been done to shut them down.

The Hindustan Timesreported today that 18 universities were deemed fake by the UGC on May 1, 2000, and fourteen of these universities appear in the most recent list published in September, 2016.

On Monday, The Hindustan Times reported reported that there are currently 23 fake universities and 279 such technical institutes operating in the country. A UGC official told HT that state authorities are asked to take action against such institutions, and public notices about fake educational institutions are published in newspapers.

Uttar Pradesh has nine fake universities, the highest in the country. Delhi has seven fake universities and 66 fake colleges that are offering engineering and other technical courses, the highest in the country.

The states with the highest number of fake technical institutes include Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharasthra.

The Hindustan Timesreported that the fourteen universities listed as fake for 17 years are: Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society (Karnataka); Commercial University Ltd. (Delhi); Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith (Uttar Pradesh); Maharana Pratap Shiksha Niketan Vishwavidyalaya (Uttar Pradesh); Mahila Gram Vidyapith/Vishwavidyalaya, (Women's University) (Uttar Pradesh); Maithili University/Vishwavidyalaya (Bihar); National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy (Uttar Pradesh); Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open University) (Uttar Pradesh); Raja Arabic University (Maharashtra); St. John's University (Kerala); United Nations University (Delhi); Uttar Pradesh Vishwavidyalaya (Uttar Pradesh); Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya (Delhi); and Vocational University (Delhi).
