PANAJI — Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday won the trust vote in the Goa Legislative Assembly, with 22 MLAs supporting his government. The Congress party received the support of 16 legislators.

Parrikar, who was sworn in as chief minister of the coastal state for the fourth time on Tuesday, now heads the Bharatiya Janata Party led coalition government, which has a slim majority in the Assembly.

Thursday's trust vote was ordered by the Supreme Court following a petition by the Congress which alleged that Goa Governor Mridula Sinha had played a partisan role by inviting the BJP to form the government. Following the declaration of the election results, the Congress had emerged as the single largest party with 17 MLAs in the 40-member Assembly.

During the trust vote, Congress suffered another blow when their MLA Vishwajit Rane abstained from voting as a mark of protest.

Rane had earlier said that the Congress had "mishandled" the situation in Goa by delaying in staking a claim to form the government.

Speaking at a press conference, Parrikar announced that the new coalition government would put forth a Common Minimum Programme within a month. He added that the programme will focus on development and employment generation.
