Five years after a violent workers protest broke out at car marker Maruti Suzuki killing one human resources manager, a Gurgaon court has convicted 31 people and acquitted 117 in the case.
Out of 148 accused, 13 people have been convicted for murder and 18 were charged with rioting. In July 2012, a labour unrest tuned violent at Maruti's Manesar plant, with workers reportedly setting fire to parts of the factory that killed a human resources manager.
The workers had been protesting unfair working conditions and violence broke out when a disagreement between workers and management spun out of control, according to an ET report.
In the aftermath of the violence, about 150 workers were arrested for alleged criminal conspiracy and murder, and the factory was shut for a month, according to media reports.
Security was beefed up in Gurgaon on Friday following the verdict with over 2,000 cops deployed at sensitive locations in the city, the Times of India reported.
