A history-sheeter, or repeat offender, wanted on charges of rape, attempt-to-rape, theft and robbery was nabbed by the police near Prestige Tech Park in Bengaluru. The accused reportedly attacked the policemen with a knife, injuring some of them, and the policemen fired at him in return to make him surrender.

According to a report in the Bangalore Mirror, on 2 March, Shivaram Reddy sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman at knife-point after he broke into her room in a house in Kundalahalli Gate where she was staying as a paying guest. Reddy left after threatening the woman with dire consequences, and taking her money and mobile phone.

The woman's roommate told the Bangalore Mirror that when they both went to register a complaint at the HAL police station, they were made to wait for close to eight hours and the police did not want to take her statement. Instead, they wanted to file the complaint based on the statement by the owner of the accommodation where they lived. The roommate also said that the police tried to convince the woman to not pursue the case and tried to bribe her with tickets for the second India-Australia cricket test match.

According to the Deccan Herald, the police managed to track Reddy down with the help of his phone number and asked him to surrender, which is when he attacked the policemen with a knife, forcing them to open fire. Reddy suffered injuries in his leg and was shifted to a hospital.

According to the police, Reddy has been named in five rape cases so far but has managed to secure bail in each instance. In 2014, he was arrested on the charge of raping a software engineer who had resisted his attempt to rob her. The police had also booked him under the Goonda Act in 2014. Earlier, he had been arrested for molesting another girl in Mahadevapura in Bengaluru but had been released on bail.
