Maharaja Sayajirao University's official annual diary for the year 2017 credits sages mentioned in old Hindu texts and scriptures with many advanced scientific discoveries.

According to a report in the Indian Express, the sages' contributions in the field of science and technology, as mentioned in the diary issued by the reputed Baroda university, includes feats such as "developing nuclear technology" and "discovering rockets and aeroplanes."

The diary recognizes Acharya Kanad for developing "nuclear technology", Kapil Muni as the "father of cosmology", Maharshi Bhardwaj for discovering "rockets and aeroplanes", and Garga Muni as a "scientist of stars".

More believably, and in line with modern historical research and scholarship, the diary refers to the physician Sushrat as the "father of cosmetic surgery" and Charak as the "father of medicine".

According to the Indian Express, all the names were recommended by MSU syndicate member Jignesh Soni, who is the son of Bapubhai Soni, a founding member of the Jan Sangh in Gujarat.

"As a diary committee, we were inclined to follow the recommendations of a senior syndicate member," said Professor Ajay Ashtaputre, Dean of Faculty of Performing Arts, and the head of the diary committee.

"Sages mean scientists," Soni told Indian Express. "Rishis are known for their researches, and are considered scientists in their own fields of knowledge. We have depicted the sages from different fields who are a part of our history and shastras."

"Many may disagree with the facts, but several people also believe it," Soni added. "Why are these names controversial? They are the forefathers of our nation who have achieved something. We should be proud of them."

University officials reportedly said these references were based on the books written by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue and founder of the Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti, Dinanath Batra.
