Look Out For These Brand New Phones At MWC Barcelona

Move over Samsung and LG, all eyes are on Nokia!

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) begins in Barcelona this week with an array of competing phones and phone makers trying to hog the limelight — be it the reigning big boys such as LG and Samsung, or erstwhile dominant brands such as Nokia and Blackberry trying to retrieve lost glory. Here are some major launches expected at MWC:

LG

Last year, LG launched it's modular flagship phone, LG G5 at MWC. The phone made a big splash at the event and was lauded for innovation. But sales were far from satisfying. So, LG went back to the drawing board and will be launching a metal uni-body LG G6 without any modular attachments. The phone will have a high-resolution display with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

With waterproofing and wide-angle dual cameras, LG is also trying out the almost bezel-less — i.e. an almost rimless display — design in its latest offering. The company will be hoping to sell many more units of the LG G5 phone than its predecessor. Just ahead of MWC, the phone-maker has also launched LG X power 2 with 4,500 mAh battery.

Nokia

The pioneering Finnish mobile brand is back with a vengeance looks like. Although HMD Global is producing and designing the new phones, they will bear the legendary Nokia tag. The phone maker is looking to launch three android phones, along with a Nokia 3310 reboot. Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 are all going to be mid-range Android offerings. In fact, the Nokia 6 has already been launched in China and is selling well.

Samsung

Samsung will not have a big presence at MWC this year, but the phone maker is expected to launch the Galaxy Tab Pro S2 at the event. According to reports, the tablet might come in two variants, with 12 and 10-inch screens. It will have the new Intel Kaby Lake processor and 8 GB of RAM. Samsung might also part with some details at MWC about its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone.

Blackberry

While the Canadian company has stopped manufacturing phones, they are still working in the field of mobile software and services. The Blackberry name and tag is now owned by the Taiwanese phone maker TCL which also manufactures Alcatel phones. At MWC, TCL will launch the Blackberry 'Mercury' — Mercury is still the phone's code name, not its official name — with a 4.5-inch screen and the iconic Blackberry keyboard. Reportedly, the phone will be using a Qualcomm chip with 3 GB of RAM and a 3,400 mAh battery.

Moto

Lenovo captured the second place in the Indian smartphone market last year, and it would want to repeat or better that feat with the new Moto G5 Plus that will be launched at MWC. The phone maker is launching two variants of the device, with 5.2 and 5 inch screens respectively. There won't be too much experimenting with the specs as the phone will get an upgraded Qualcomm processor and camera. One major differentiation from the previous iteration will be its metal body.

Moto

Other players launching their new phones at the event include Meizu and Gionee, with the latter set to launch A1 and A1 Plus phones in the high-end category.
