DARJEELING -- A new district of Kalimpong was carved out of Darjeeling on Tuesday by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Now, Kalimpong has become West Bengal's 21st district.
Spreading over 1,056 square kms, Kalimpong is Bengal's least populated district with a population under 50,000.
While declaring formation of the new district at Mela Grounds in Kalimpong, Mamata also announced a slew of development projects for the same.
"We have formed 15 developmental boards. We have taken initiatives to promote tourism," she said.
"We want the development of Kalimpong and the hills. We want the youth to get employment," she added.
Mamata also said 14 February would now be celebrated as 'Kalimpong Day'.
"14th February is Kalimpong Day from now. My best wishes for all," she said.
Kalimpong was once a breeding ground for Gorkhal and statehood agitation.
