A 20-year-old woman from Jaisinghpur, Uttar Pradesh, who had accused a Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA of raping her in 2013, was found dead near her house on Sunday morning.

According to a report in The Indian Express the woman, who was a gangrape survivor, had stepped out of her house for some work on Saturday evening but did not return. After her parents filed a report with the police, her body was found on Sunday morning, some 50 metres away from her home, at a government primary school's campus.

The police said there were strangulation marks on her neck.

SP MLA Arun Verma said the incident was a "political conspiracy" to tarnish his name by bringing out old incidents during election time in the state. He said:

"I demand a CBI investigation in this case."

Verma, against whom an FIR had been filed in 2013 after he was named by the woman's father, was absolved of any involvement in the case. According to NDTV, he was in Lucknow at the time of the gangrape, which led the police to remove his name from the chargesheet against him.

Eight people were at first charged with the rape of the 20-year-old woman in 2013, but later Verma was given the clean chit. There is a case going on against the seven other accused.

UPDATE: Now a case has been filed against Verma under section 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), for allegedly killing the woman.
