In a shocking incident of child abuse, a 15-year-old girl child became pregnant after she was allegedly repeatedly raped by her guardian in Karnataka's Koppal district.

According to a report in the Times Of India, the victim is a Class 7 student in a government school who had been abandoned by her biological parents and was staying with Krishnappa, who works as a labourer, and his blind wife.

A police officer investigating the case said, "Krishnappa, who is a drunkard, allegedly assaulted and raped the victim on several occasions." According to the police, Krishnappa has been arrested earlier for running an illegal slaughter house.

The accused is also alleged to have threatened the victim with serious consequences if she reported the abuse. Others in the village informed the police about the case only after the girl became pregnant.

According to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), almost 20,000 children were sexually assaulted in 2015 and crime against children went up by 5.3 percent in 2015 compared to the previous year.
