In a bizarre attempt to emphasize the importance of voting, Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav, also a Rajya Sabha lawmaker, has ended up making a shocking remark about the "honour of a daughter."
In a speech made on 24 January in Patna, released by ANI, Yadav said, "beti ki izzat se vote ki izzat badi hai" (the honour of a vote is higher than the honour of a daughter). He then proceeds to give a seriously disturbing rationale.
"If the honour of the daughter goes then the honour of the village/mohallah goes, but if you sell your vote then the whole nation loses its honour and all our future dreams vanish," he said.
Last year, Yadav kicked up a storm in the Rajya Sabha when he said, "In the entire country there are more saanvle men. The women of south are beautiful, their bodies...their skin ...We don't see it here. They know dance."
