Xiaomi's global VP Hugo Barra stepped down from the position today in a surprise announcement. He is going to move to the US to start a new venture and will continue in an advisory role at Xiaomi.

Barra made this announcement through a Facebook post thanking the founders, the company, and the fans. He had joined Xiaomi in 2013 from Google. The charismatic presenter saw the launch of many flagship products including a series of Mi and Redmi smartphones.

He announced that he will be moving to the Silicon Valley soon. The man who looked over Android in Google and launched successful phones such as Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 is looking to start something new as per his post.

While China and India were the biggest markets Barra handled, more than 20 countries were under his umbrella. With his dynamic presentation style, he was quite popular in India. Xiaomi India crossed a revenue mark of $1 billion dollars last year thanks to him and the company's India head Manu Kumar Sharma.

This year was the first time when the company had a keynote at CES. It presented a stunning paper-thin TV and won three awards. Barra's last act was to launch Redmi Note 4 in India on 19 January.

On the other hand, XIaomi is focusing on the products apart from the smartphone in China a lot. The smartphone sales haven't been that great for the company as it fell out of top 5 vendors in the country last year in the first quarter.
