I shot these pictures during the protests against the Jallikattu ban, on Marina Beach, Chennai. Without going into the merits of the issue, the protest itself was incredible to witness. Tens of thousands of people all gathered at the promenade marching, chanting, drumming, dancing. The crowd included, women, children, people in wheelchairs, people of all ages, from all faiths and communities. The entire gathering was peaceful, friendly and doing their best to minimise the disruption to the general public. Masses of volunteers equipped with gloves and masks were cleaning up garbage. Still other volunteers were distributing bottles of water and biscuits. There were people selling red, LED-lit horns, for 20 rupees each. There were no politicians or political posters (other than the posters of those being lampooned for the ban), and it felt like a genuine mass movement.
